Introduction

In the digital age, businesses are constantly on the lookout for new and innovative ways to broaden their reach. One such way that has become increasingly popular is affiliate marketing, as the name suggests, the affiliate marketing involves partnering with affiliates, who promote a company’s products or services in exchange for a commission.

In affiliate marketing, there is a marketing niche that is proven to be quite profitable these days, that is the “Utility Vertical”. But while it may be delivering good results for some affiliates, you need to take the time and understand how these utility verticals work, and how to promote these utility verticals to drive traffic on your mobile app this summer of 2024.

Understanding the Utility Vertical

The utility vertical goes far beyond the simple act of managing files on your computer, it's like a toolbox overflowing with specialized instruments, each designed to optimize and enhance your digital experience. These tools encompass a wide range of functionalities, like,

  • Security measures that shield your system from digital threats
  • Performance boosters that streamline daily tasks
  • Safeguards against malicious attacks.

The utility vertical offers a comprehensive suite of software solutions to tackle all your digital needs, to be more clear, we’ll take a look at the various offers for the utilities vertical:

Antiviruses

Antivirus software is designed to prevent and detect viruses, and since summer is coming, it means more travel and reliance on public Wi-Fi networks, which can be less secure, that way people will rely more on apps for anti-viruses to protect their devices and data while on the go. That is why, it is one of the best apps to use when driving traffic.

VPN

While VPNs don't directly drive traffic, they indirectly boost summer app and website use, by encrypting data on public Wi-Fi’s, it allows users to securely access activities that often increase during summer, like travel booking sites, online banking, and social media. Additionally, VPNs can bypass geo-restrictions, potentially granting access to a wider range of streaming content or travel information, making VPN another best way to drive traffic during summer.

File managers

Summer often involves travel and the need to access files from different locations, this can lead to increased usage of apps or websites related to travel planning, photo sharing, or collaborative work on documents during the summer months. A good place to put your ads during summer.

Ad blockers

Ad blockers are applications (like plugins or browser extensions) that remove or alter advertising content on a webpage, but some of these applications replace that advertising content with something else. And, some specifically block things that could compromise a user's privacy.

Payment Models and Opportunities

Media Buying Models

There are various payment models in affiliate marketing for apps. Here are some common ones:

Cost-Per-Install (CPI)

CPI refers to media programs where the advertiser pays for every installed app. Lots of app marketing is purchased via CPI, because it is a fast way to drive installs.

Cost-Per-Sale (CPS)

CPS is a relatively low-risk way to buy media because the advertiser only pays when a user takes definable steps, or when you recognize revenue.

PIN-Submit (PIN Submit Offer)

Pin submit offers are offers that target mobile devices and let users use billing services to pay for subscriptions and other products directly via their phones, it is a good choice for affiliates to advertise because they naturally facilitate a better conversion rate.

Low Entry Barriers and Flexible Creatives in Utilities:

The utility vertical offers some unique advantages for advertisers and publishers:

Low Entry Barrier:  Many utilities have established affiliate programs, making it easy for almost anyone to participate. You don't necessarily need a high-traffic website to get started.

Flexible Creatives: Utilities often offer a variety of creatives, from banner ads to explainer videos. This allows you to tailor your approach to your audience and optimize for conversions.

Monetizing Traffic Effectively

Because you can’t call it a website if there is no traffic, here are some tips for effectively monetizing traffic in the utility space:

Tip #1 - Target the Right Audience, this is repeatedly mentioned when we talked about monetizing traffic, but it always works.

Tip #2 - Highlight Benefits, people are more likely to take action when they learn about the benefits of your products.

Tip #3 - Use Clear CTAs.

Tip #4 - Track and Analyze, it is always important to monitor your progress for improvement.

Banner Ads

It is a rectangular image or text that is displayed within an app's interface, typically at the top or bottom of the screen, banner ads are generally less disruptive, but this can also make them easier to ignore. Therefore, its effectiveness depends heavily on creative design, placement, and targeting.

Interstitial Ads

Full-screen ads are displayed between app activities or transitions, they can be images, videos, or even interactive experiences. Its ad placement grabs attention and can lead to higher click-through rates compared to banner ads.

Native Ads

Native ads seamlessly blend into the app's design and content, mimicking the look and feel of the surrounding content (e.g., sponsored content in a newsfeed) making them less intrusive and more likely to pique user interest, potentially leading to higher click-through rates.

  • Pricing Model (how much you pay for each click or impression depending on the pricing model you've chosen)
  • Traffic Quality
  • Ad Selection (Choose between your existing ad campaigns or create a new one.)

Step 2: Targeting

You can set up the needed locations and devices for your ads.

You can set up your target location manually or based on an IP Address.

In Selecting your GEO,

Manually: Choose the needed GEO and connection type manually.

IP Ranges: Just enter the needed IP ranges. They need to be separated by commas without spaces. Example: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.3-192.168.1.5 or 192.168.2.0/8. All of the IP range formats can be combined.

Note: The only difference here is how you choose your GEO, the rest is the same.

Step 3: Sources

In this step, you can choose the sites your ad will be shown at.

There are two presets to choose from:

RON – all the available sites possible. You can either blacklist or whitelist them to optimize your campaign;

Premium sites – these are the sites from our exclusive partner. Selecting this one you can choose the sites from the list provided. List of the sites depends on the ad format you use.

In this step also, if you select the RON(ALL) sources you can set your BID to get a better ad placement on your preferred sites.

 Step 4: Limit

If you need to limit your campaign traffic, and costs or set some calendar rules, certainly visit this tab. You can limit your campaign by the amount of money or impressions (depends on the limit type you've set).

Both of the limit types can be set for:

  • Each hour;
  • Each day;
  • Total limit for the whole campaign.

Remember:

No need to set all the limits we provide for the same amount of money or impressions. For example, if you set the total limit of 50 USD and the daily limit of 50 USD, the total limit will override the daily limit, so the traffic will stop once the total limit is reached. We also have calendar limits which limit traffic for each specific hour of the specific weekday. Please, note that our timezone is UTC +0. So, if you would like to set a traffic limit for an exact hour, keep in mind the time gap between the two time zones.

If you would like to exclude all traffic in the exact hour or day, just set 0 in the cell.

Finally, click “create campaign” and you are ready to go.
